Welcome to The Midwifery Collective of Ottawa

The Midwifery Collective of Ottawa officially came into being following the Midwifery legislation in 1994. Midwives are primary health care providers, registered with the College of Midwives of Ontario. The practice offers midwifery care for your pregnancy, labour, birth and the six week postpartum period. Care is completely funded by the Ministry of Health for residents of Ontario. The practice's catchment area encompasses the greater Ottawa area. We have privileges at Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital located at 1053 Carling Avenue, at Parkdale.

All midwifery practices in Ontario are teaching practices and as such you may have a midwifery student as part of your care team. The midwives in our practice catch close to 400 babies each year. The practice began with and continues to have midwives from various backgrounds. Some are graduates from the Ontario Midwifery Education Program based at Ryerson, McMaster and Laurentian Universities. Others are trained internationally and certified through the International Midwifery Pre-registration Program.

The Ontario model of midwifery is based on the following three principles:

  • Choice of birthplace
  • Continuity of care
  • Informed choice.

The childbearing woman is recognized as the primary decision maker. Midwives encourage and give assistance to women wishing to seek out resources to assist them in the decision making process. Midwives practice in partnership with women. The interactive process of informed choice involves the promotion of shared responsibility between the midwife, the woman and her family as defined by the woman. Midwives encourage women to actively participate in their care throughout pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum and make choices about the manner in which care is provided while ensuring that women are well informed of the benefits and risks of possible courses of care. Women may choose to give birth at home or in the hospital. Midwives are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Women are active decision makers in the care they receive.
